ENCINITAS, Calif. (Business Wire EON) February 14, 2008 — FreedomVOICE Systems, a licensed telecommunications carrier specializing in virtual office solutions, has developed a powerful tool to manage telecommuting with their FreedomIQ VOIP hosted PBX.

With easy installation, no scaling penalties, and no contracts, we make it easy for employers to grow the system with their business. At any time, our customers are only paying for what they need.

Telecommuting employees are highly mobile, working from home offices, remote work sites, or while traveling. With FreedomIQ Follow-Me-Live call forwarding, incoming phone calls can reach the employee no matter where they are or what type of phone they are using. Since a VOIP hosted PBX uses the internet to transmit calls, the reach of FreedomIQ is not limited to in-office call transfer like a hardwired PBX.

Telecommuting helps recruit and retain valuable workers. According to a survey conducted by LifeCare, one of the largest privately owned employee benefits organizations in the U.S., flexible work arrangements mattered more to personnel than health care. Robert Half International asked CFOs what incentive was the most effective in attracting top accounting candidates. Telecommuting was listed as the top incentive by a surprising 33% of respondents.

According to officials at FreedomVOICE Systems, telecommuting can also increase efficiency in the hiring process. Recently they created two listings on Monster.com that offered nearly identical technical support positions. One was available nationally via telecommuting, while the other was an office position requiring workers to live within commute distance. They report that the telecommuting listing received over 1,300 views, more than ten times as many as the regional listing. Consequently, the telecommuting listing generated nearly five times as many qualified respondents. Telecommuting respondents had a significantly higher level of education on average, yet their desired annual wage was approximately 11% lower than those applying for the regional position.

According to the General Service Administration, a single worker saves his employer as much as $5,000 a year just by telecommuting. Less money is spent on workstations, maintenance, utilities bills, common office space and insurance.

Despite telecommuting’s attractiveness (including tax incentives in many states), many employers worry about the efficiency of their out-of-sight employees. Christopher Hayes and Chris Lounder of Cruise Adventure Travel shared this concern.

“We determined that the most critical components for our ideal phone service would be a call recording system, a call monitoring system, and most importantly, a system or method to hold all of our agents accountable for their working hours, here or at home.”

After using FreedomIQ for only two months, they discovered that it, “goes a step beyond remote management, and is likely better described as real-time virtual management, not much different than having an actual manager working alongside every one of our agents, even if they are thousands of miles away.”

Using the FreedomIQ WebLINK Internet Control Panel, Hayes and Lounder can listen in on live telephone calls to train remote employees. FreedomIQ service also includes 24/7 on-demand teleconferencing, allowing employers to ensure quality control, keep workers on task, and decrease the sense of isolation felt by some telecommuters.

FreedomIQ allows employers to manage by results, as well. With the click of a button, an employer can generate reports detailing:

Login times

Answered and missed calls

Average and total time on calls

Number of calls received in a date range

Duration of calls to specific numbers

While telecommuting with a VOIP hosted PBX has many advantages, an ever-shifting business environment may force the alteration of work arrangements. An employee who normally works at a remote location may need to work for an extended period in the business office or vice versa. The extreme scalability of FreedomIQ gives businesses the freedom to adapt at a low cost. Unlike the additional hardware and expensive wiring of scaling up an office-based PBX system, employers can instantly add or subtract new features and phone stations for their FreedomIQ service.

“FreedomIQ was created with flexibility in mind,” says Eric Thomas, CEO and founder FreedomVOICE Systems. “With easy installation, no scaling penalties, and no contracts, we make it easy for employers to grow the system with their business. At any time, our customers are only paying for what they need.”

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. scientists have developed a microfiber fabric that generates its own electricity, making enough current to recharge a cell phone or ensure that a small MP3 music player never runs out of power.

If made into a shirt, the fabric could harness power from its wearer simply walking around or even from a slight breeze, they reported Wednesday in the journal Nature.

“The fiber-based nanogenerator would be a simple and economical way to harvest energy from the physical movement,” Zhong Lin Wang of the Georgia Institute of Technology, who led the study, said in a statement.

The nanogenerator takes advantage of the semiconductive properties of zinc oxide nanowires — tiny wires 1,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair — embedded into the fabric. The wires are formed into pairs of microscopic brush-like structures, shaped like a baby-bottle brush.

One of the fibers in each pair is coated with gold and serves as an electrode. As the bristles brush together through a person’s body movement, the wires convert the mechanical motion into electricity.

“When a nanowire bends it has an electric effect,” Wang said in a telephone interview. “What the fabric does is it translates the mechanical movement of your body into electricity.”

His team made the nanogenerator by first coating fibers with a polymer, and then a layer of zinc oxide. They dunked this into a warm bath of reactive solution for 12 hours. This encouraged the wires to multiply, coating the fibers.

“They automatically grow on the surface of the fiber,” Wang said. “In principal, you could use any fiber that is conductive.”

They added another layer of polymer to prevent the zinc oxide from being scrubbed off. And they added an ultra-thin layer of gold to some fibers, which works as a conductor.

To ensure all that friction was not just generating static electricity, the researchers conducted several tests. The fibers produced current only when both the gold and the zinc oxide bristles brushed together.

So far, Wang said the researchers had demonstrated the principle and developed a small prototype.

“Our estimates show we can have up to 80 milliwatts per square meter of this fabric. This is enough to power a little iPod or charge a cell phone battery,” he said.

“What we’ve done is demonstrate the principle and the fundamental mechanism.”

Wang said the material could be used by hikers and soldiers in the field and also to power tiny sensors used in biomedicine or environmental monitoring.

One major hurdle remains: zinc oxide degrades when wet. Wang’s team is working on a process that would coat the fibers to protect the fabric in the laundry.

If you haven’t purchased an iPhone yet, you may want to wait just a little bit longer. Supposedly the next generation of iPhone will offer some substantial upgrades, including 3G capabilities. “To be sure, a 3G iPhone likely won’t pop up over the next several weeks. The Unofficial Apple Weblog reported this week that Apple is hiring a television production firm in preparation for a high-profile late February announcement. That event, however, will likely detail the widely anticipated release of a software developer’s kit for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch. But the wait can’t drag on much longer. AT&T is building out its high-speed wireless network as quickly as it can, announcing Wednesday that it will expand its 3G wireless broadband service to more than 80 additional cities by the end of the year for a total of roughly 350 markets.”

Charging your cell phone might soon be as simple as taking a walk around the block.

Scientists have created a new machine that harvests energy from the movement of the knees while walking.

Six volunteers wore the devices on their legs while strolling on a treadmill and were able to produce about five watts of electrical power each. That’s enough energy to run 10 cell phones simultaneously.

“Since muscles are the powerhouses of the body, my colleagues and I designed our device to generate electricity from the motion of the knee joint,” said Max Donelan, director of the Locomotion Laboratory at Simon Fraser University in Canada. “It resembles a knee brace and weighs about 1.5 kilograms [3.3 pounds] including the gearing and generator.”

Results from tests of the device were published in the Feb. 8 issue of the journal, Science.

The apparatus captures the energy of a person’s movement by coupling an electrical generator to knee motion.

When the wearer extends the knee, a gear on the device turns and spins the generator, which builds up energy.

When the knee is flexed, the device turns off so as not to tax the wearer. The machine senses motion and knows when to activate itself.

The design allows a person to use the tool without expending much additional energy beyond the normal demands of walking. The researchers measured the volunteers’ oxygen intake and carbon-dioxide output to make sure it wasn’t strenuous to use.

Work on a similar device built into a backpack was announced in 2005.

“People are an excellent source of portable power,” Donelan said. “An average-sized person stores as much energy in fat as a 1,000-kilogram battery. People recharge their body batteries with food and, lucky for us, there is about as much useful energy in a 35-gram granola bar as in a 3.5-kilogram lithium-ion battery.”

The device could be used to power computers in remote regions where electricity is scarce, Donelan said.

“The early markets are people whose lives depend on portable power, such as people with artificial limbs,” Donelan told LiveScience. “On the military side, soldiers have an incredible dependence on batteries these days, so both these groups could benefit.”
